Specimens of natural ecosystems, including characteristic and/or notable wild plant and animal species and their habitats, are designated as reserves. Reserves are managed to:
- Preserving their natural character
- Scientific and educational activities and/or environmental monitoring
- Conservation of genetic resources
- Conservation of natural habitats and populations of protected rare, endemic and relict species
- Development of a network of representative ecosystems and threatened habitats for Bulgaria and Europe
All activities are prohibited in the reserves, except: their protection, visits for scientific purposes, the passage of people along marked trails, including for educational purposes, the collection of seed material, wild plants and animals for scientific purposes, fire suppression and sanitation activities in forests damaged by natural disasters.
